E.S.C.A.P.E., Inc. is a private, non-profit educational
Michigan corporation founded in 1995 by Firefighter/Instructor Michael McLeieer. In 2000 Jon Brickett, FF / NREMT-P / Instructor, joined the company along with FF / EMT-B Scott Maker. Together they have over 32 years of Firefighting & EMS experience.
Our mission is to educate
as many children and adults as possible in how to quickly &
carefully escape from a burning home. We also offer other instructional
classes in home & commercial fire prevention tips, CPR, basic
first aid, bloodborne pathogens, or how to render aid to a choking
victim (See our sister company E.S.C.A.P.E.
Fire & Safety Services Co. for more details on courses offered).
E.S.C.A.P.E. stands for Education
Showing Children
Awareness and Procedures
for Evacuations.
Fire Safety
Program:
Each year, thousands of children are killed
in house fires. Actually, it's not the fire that kills them, but
the smoke & toxic gases present as a result of the fire.
If a child is present during
a fire, many times he or she will panic and hide either under
their bed, in their closet, or in the shower or bathtub because
the child is scared. This makes the firefighter's search and rescue
more difficult due to the intense smoke and heat present.
Smoke alarms aid in the quick
alert to a rapidly spreading fire, however, E.S.C.A.P.E. focuses
on teaching children more than the "Stop, Drop and Roll"
theory.
With the assistance of Sparky
the fire dog® and our 27 foot smoke simulation trailer decorated
in a children's bedroom theme, we demonstrate and explain to groups
of 20 children how quickly smoke enters the model bedroom both
under the door and through a heat register. The children are able
to watch the simulated smoke rise and activate the smoke alarm
located on the ceiling. The smoke is non-toxic and is widely used
by firefighters in their training sessions. By the end of the
30 minute presentation, participants ultimately learn the reasons
to quickly and carefully escape the dangers of fire and why to
practice E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills
in the Home).
Some of the items taught
to the children are:
-
The importance of having a
working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm and proper placement
of each.
-
Check each alarm once a month
and change the batteries twice a year.
-
What to do if they wake up
at night to the sound of the smoke alarm.
-
Check the closed bedroom door
knob with the back of the hand.
-
How to block smoke coming
in from under the bedroom door (if closed) or through the heat
register.
-
The importance of NOT hiding
from the firefighters. We explain common hiding places (under
the bed, in the closet or in the shower or bathtub).
-
How to properly exit a burning
home and once outside, going to a pre-planned family meeting
place.
-
How to properly dial for
any emergency through the use of our dialing simulator machine.
